Tips from Paul

'Panorama Walcheren is definitely worth a visit,' says Paul. 'It is a collection of mega-paintings, man-sized and tens of metres wide, arranged in a half or three-quarter circle. Each panorama shows an interesting spot on Walcheren. They give the feeling that you are actually on the spot. Very nice to look at Walcheren in a different way.' 'Something a bit different from the beach? Then go take a look at Fort Rammekens,' says Paul. Located on the Western Scheldt near Ritthem (Vlissingen), Fort Rammekens is the oldest sea fort in Western Europe. Dating from 1547, it once played an important role in Zeeland's rich maritime history. Just entering with the heavy, metre-high, thick wooden doors of the entrance gate is an experience. Wandering around the dark half bastions, the casemates, the former powder rooms and in the imposing main bastion, you get a picture of times gone by. Paul: 'Standing on the fortress, you have a beautiful view of the Westerschelde.'

Ring riding

And of course, ring-riding and shepherding cannot be missed. The season starts on King's Day and lasts through September. Almost every weekend there is a competition in one of the villages. Paul himself rides in Koudekerke. In August, the Zeeland Championships are held in Middelburg. Paul: 'Just for the atmosphere, the Zeeland culture and the beautiful tubers, you should go and have a look. This really should not be missing from your holiday in Zeeland,' he laughs.

Finally, Paul also mentions the Boulevard in Vlissingen. Paul: 'Wonderful to go and have a look. Seeing the sea at the edge of the city is magnificent. And are you in Middelburg? Then climbing the Lange Jan is a nice challenge. The Abbey Tower is a 90.5-metre-high church tower belonging to the abbey complex. The tower has 207 steps. But once at the top, you have a great view here too.'
